The annual Festival of Sport in Northwich is set to expand to become one of the landmark events in the town’s calendar. Northwich Rugby Club, which has traditionally run the sports festival on the August Bank Holiday has this year teamed up with Vale Royal Borough Council, Cheshire County Council and the Development of the Arts in Northwich to create an extravaganza. Due to be held over four days at Moss Farm, the event will now be known as Northwich Festival and organisers are aiming to make it the “best value event in the Northwich social calendar”. This year’s launch event will be dedicated to the memory of the late John Nancollis, a legend in Northwich rugby circles who died earlier this month. Sam Naylor, chairman of Northwich RUFC and a founder member of the Festival of Sport, said: “The festival has become slightly tired over the past couple of years and although we have a great deal of experience, we need the expertise and clout of our new partners.” Chris Bottomley, head of cultural services at the borough council, commented: “The borough is determined to provide the very best for our residents and year on year we will work to make the Northwich Festival a ‘flagship’ event.” The event kicks off on Friday, August 22, with a premier sportsman’s dinner, addressed by Welsh rugby legend and British Lion Phil Bennett. A show night will be held on the Saturday, featuring famous Irish band The Bogtrotters and DAN presents a battle of the bands event on the Sunday, featuring an array of local music groups. The grand final will be held on the Monday night, after a whole day dedicated to countless sporting contests. And throughout the weekend there will be a fair, street theatre performances, various stalls, exhibitions and much more.
Tim Pickering, who will spearhead this year’s rugby events, said: “I am taking over the mantle of John Nancollis who recently very sadly passed away. We all owe it to his memory to make this into a massive yearly event.” April 2003
