Northwich Festival 2005 Every Year over the August Bank holiday weekend, the Moss Farm site hosts an annual ‘Festival of Sport’. Now called the Northwich Festival it is organised jointly by Northwich Rugby Club, Vale Royal Borough Council, Cheshire County Council. Not just a sporting event the Festival is a landmark event in the local calendar featuring not just sports events but entertainment for all the family.
The sun eventually broke through after lunch and a bumper crowd descended on Moss Farm for the Bank Holiday Monday section of the Northwich Festival.
The crowd were transfixed with the revamped Cheshire Strongman Contest as eleven burley contestants fought it out for the coveted title. Mark Preece had put together a gruelling competion which went down to the wire with unknown quantity Clive Lyne, aged 25yrs, from Heywood Greater Manchester clinching the £500 first prize by being the only competitor to complete the last event. Seven times previous winner Paul Hayes, (Manchester) was pushed into second place and local lads Ben Bishop, (Leftwich) and Andy Walter, (Middlewich) tied for third place.
Preece and Festival Director Tim Pickering have big plans for expanding next years contest with the possibility of holding regional qualifiers with the final at Moss Farm.
The Children's races were won by Owen Harvey, Daniel Forster, Sam Dutton and Asley Tolley, (boys). Bethany Violet and Jaclyn Clarke won the girls events.
Northwich RUFC retained the Tug of War Championship by beating a team from Manchester in a thrilling final.
Body Builders Paul Sutton and Bernie Cooper gave a warm up display in preparation for their participation in the Mr Universe Contest at Southport in October.
On Sunday Kaylie MacDean 11yrs won the Miss Northwich Festival. Danielle Haseldene 8yrs won the Miss Summer Festival and Connor Jones 7yrs won the Mr Muscleman contest, all three come from Winsford.
On Sunday night Dave Jones from Congleton won the Song from the Heart of Cheshire competition and Andrew Stubbs also from Congleton was runner up.
Northwich RUFC Chairman Sam Naylor said, " All in all this was a fabulous weekend which really does put Vale Royal on the Map. We will continue to work with our many partners, particularly the Borough Council, to ensure that the Northwich Festival continues to be the Best Value for Money Event in the Northwich Social Calendar."
